Hours later, I wrapped the last of the bandages over Wild and checked his vitals one more time. Wild was laid on his side so there was no pressure on the burns, and he was breathing steadily. While long, it had been a satisfactory operation in total, and Wild should have minimal scarring. There were only four areas which needed major skin grafts, and his thighs had provided enough skin for them.
I had then used the RECELL to encourage growth to heal the graft areas. On the second degree burns Iâd used the brand new RECELL technique which encouraged skin growth without a graft. Those looked like raw meat but slowly they would begin to build up new layers of skin. This was the miracle procedure people were clamouring to learn, to create skin regrowth from a few cells.
âTake him to recovery. You need to let Wild wake and then sedate him. The procedure requires us to ensure he is alert before sending Wild back under,â I said to Paul.
âThat was something special, Iâd love to work with you again,â Paul said.
âWhy donât you apply to train? Then Iâm not the only one?â I asked.
âBecause I adore general surgery and couldnât imagine being anywhere else. But Iâd love to train under you and learn this. This was also done to cover the scars on Calamityâs back.â
âThatâs true. Iâm happy for you to work with me on any cases, Paul, that come up, but do consider doing this course. Well will worth it,â I encouraged.
Paul nodded, but I got the feeling he wouldnât. Heâd be content being an assistant. Paul was a man of many talents, and clearly, general surgery was his speciality, whereas mine was now this.
Two nurses wheeled Wild away as Paul and I walked into a small room where we stripped off our surgical gowns, hats, and masks and began washing vigorously. Paul continued to ask several questions, which I happily answered, and then we glanced at one another.
âLetâs go face the music,â I said, and Paul winked.
A couple of hours into the surgery, Iâd been notified a lawyer was waiting outside for me and to stop immediately. Iâd ignored it and continued. Now it was time to pay the piper or the damn cowboy. But even so, no matter what happened, Iâd saved Wild, and I already knew heâd have minimal scarring.
